Christ's rebuke of the Pharisees was functionally that they had placed appearance of piety and the status that it commanded above actually loving and striving to serve God. They were masters of the letter of the law without regard to its spirit. They were so full of hubris that the idea of them not understanding something that was clearly from God— Christ and His many miracles, angered them and the obvious threat to their power even more so. They had moneychangers inside the temple in the outer yard layer, the space supposed to be reserved for ALL who were coming to worship. The greedy jews not only skimmed on the ForEx process, but they did it in a holy place— the only area where normies could worship within the temple. He had every right to be mad at them.
