@toiletpaper @onan I am trying to explain why normal non-Christians fell into this hysteria as well as conservative Christians (and non-conservative Christians.) They didn't believe it was literal Satan worshipers they believed it was weirdo fucks. You're absolutely right though, indigenous european religions consistently got accused of being overt or covert Satanists all the time. I know that's still a thing you have to worry about but the modern incarnation is worried about very real, rich weirdos.
