Old school primitive ones had less risky unknowns but they caused you to become sick with the disease a non-zero amount of time, like the rabies vaccine. That one is still used in third world countries, and the worst thing is you'd have no way of knowing if it was vaccine induced or not because you only get the rabies vax when you're exposed to rabies...
