@publicvoit @saxnot DisplayPort is 100% open and available for FOSS. It's by the VESA group, the same people that gave us VGA and DVI.

HDMI should not exist. VESA was too slow to bring DisplayPort to market, and the TV manufacturers went with HDMI instead.

That's basically the important history. VESA was slow and (presumably) underfunded and didn't deliver on time. But now their product is superior.
