feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 00:35:28 JST feld @publicvoit @saxnot DisplayPort is 100% open and available for FOSS. It's by the VESA group, the same people that gave us VGA and DVI.
HDMI should not exist. VESA was too slow to bring DisplayPort to market, and the TV manufacturers went with HDMI instead.
That's basically the important history. VESA was slow and (presumably) underfunded and didn't deliver on time. But now their product is superior.- narcolepsy and alcoholism :flag: likes this.

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 00:35:30 JST feld @publicvoit @saxnot You really don't want it over USB-C as if the connection is USB 3.0 it will be handled with DisplayLink which is absolutely terrible. Otherwise with USB 4.0, and Thunderbolt it's still DisplayPort just a different connector, but now you have the problem of finding cables that are compatible! -

Then it needs to be a different protocol - I don't really care as long as it works and it's available for FOSS.
Currently, I'm using lenovo t490 -TB/USB-C-> TB3 doch -HDMI/DP-> 2 TFTs. An additional desktop is also connecting the other two DP/HDMI plugs. As long as the TFTs don't offer more DP inputs or multi-TB-USB-C in parallel, I rely on whatever connector they offer.

Karl Voit :emacs: :orgmode: (publicvoit@graz.social)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 00:35:32 JST Karl Voit :emacs: :orgmode: @feld @saxnot As if most people are able to choose freely.
I do have a multi-monitor setup with two hosts and I need both, HDMI and DP, because each TFT has those two inputs (and DP daisy-chaining isn't working here) and the hosts do have one HDMI and one DP output each.
I personally would prefer both connector/protocol standards to die and use any USB-C-based connection instead with whatever protocol that works (also with FOSS).
YMMV.

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 00:35:33 JST feld @saxnot @publicvoit it is superior and it's from the same folks who brought you the open standards behind VGA and DVI (VESA). HDMI has always been a closed-ish standard from a private entity. -

Saxnot [38C3] (saxnot@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 02-Mar-2024 00:35:39 JST Saxnot [38C3] @publicvoit overall DisplayPort is still faster and has the more durable cables than HDMI, right?
Because long time ago I chose to only use DisplayPort within my home since back then it was more capable and the cables did not break all the time. -
