Customizing a tiling WM usually involves writing scripts and editing confusing config files.
Good customization done on a desktop environments means you get to customize it using a GUI. Think of all the settings you find on KDE or XFCE. Like window behavior, panels, docks, widgets, etc.
I consider KDE and XFCE desktop customization done right, something that current GNOME is very lacking in with their more "one size fits all" approach.
