Just like old models legitimize the status quo, new models can shake it up.

I think Marx said it best:

"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it."

Mainstream economists not viewing themselves as philosophers, but rather "objective scientists" is part of the problem.
