Atheism is a lack of belief in a God. Unless an atheist says otherwise, they aren't claiming that God doesn't exist by being an atheist, they're just saying that they don't believe the claims that religious people make about God existing. There are obviously gnostic atheist who claim to be absolutely sure that God doesn't exist, but there are also agnostic atheist who admit to not being sure of the existence of God but don't believe due to a lack of evidence.
