Does a modern grenade just randomly explode? Or is there a mechanical failsafe to stop it from detonating?

I'm fairly sure nukes are designed in the opposite manner - they don't just sit there on the brink of detonating with various fail-safes holding them back, but more akin to a binary charge that is only truly dangerous when fully "armed".
