The upper classes, the land owners and colonial administrators did ship their women folk over with them. For a lot of the transported convicts and indented servants the death rates in their new world homes were astronomical. I've heard the numbers were something around 7 or 8 dead colonists for each surviving American which is why the plantation owners switched to a slave population of peoples already resistant to tropical diseases.
