@theogrin I have a pet speculation that many/most of American (and likely more conservative European) cultural values are basically the emotional flotsam left over from a society that was primarily agrarian and far more spread out. In such a place and time, children were an essential aspect of survival and romanticized into "bloodlines" and such. Now the practical needs are gone, but the myth remains.
