if you accept nitrogen fixation then I don't see why people couldn't space out and grow stuff for themselves. but that would be incredibly time inefficient and you'd still be dependent on "the system" for the energy to fixate nitrogen as well as water for irrigation

realistically the answer is that ship sailed long ago short of global collapse and mass die off
