> can you really do without computers?
Well, it's not my island.
There's a question of "Can you, in this society?" and the bank doesn't even give you checks any more, you have to order them. People don't accept checks. There's a complete shift in career, and find a trade school or a college that doesn't require a computer, find a job you can do. You can't work fast food without using a computer. So, Kevin Mitnick, he was lucky: he capitalized on his notoriety, bashed out a book about social engineering on a typewriter, handed it to a friend to typeset. Nobody else is going to be quite as lucky as that: as famous as :captcrunch: John Draper :captcrunch: is, I don't think he could have gotten that much attention, and otherwise Mitnick would have been just another unknown author.
So, we live in this society, and it's basically a sentence that stops you practicing work or hobby, or even acquiring a new profession. I've got plenty of work if I'm on an island. I'd rather not do without a computer, but I'd also rather not wipe my ass with leaves. I'm sure I'd adjust.
> was reading about hackers being sentenced and told that they cannot use computers for 5 years in the past.
Has happened a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN4fCK23Srk
> I dont think that should be allowed; that is akin to torture.
Ritual humiliation of the enemy. You read the judge's remarks when setting Kevin's terms, the prosecutor suggesting that he learn how to flip a burger. In their own words, they viewed him as arrogant and wanted to humble him. They had this guy that had done something that they didn't understand, they had letter-writing campaigns from nerds calling them idiots, so they pushed him into the ground, and asked "Now who's an idiot?" The intent was to torture.
So, you know, gas the fuckin' normies.
