They need long supply lines so they can relocate their factories at will. If China gets too uppity, they go to India. If workers unionize in Kentucky, they easily go to Tennessee. But if transport is expensive, capitol is at a disadvantage, because you're likely already using the cheapest distribution network you've got. This weakens their bargaining position no matter who they're bargaining with.
