@HistoPol i haven't seen the Maddow program. I think current scholarship in history is starting to really look at the Reagan years and the success of the movement conservatives and there kin in the Federalist society.

But I feel like there's more scholarship coming out more often on it but does that mean it's common knowledge for US political historians? I don't know if I can answer that.
