Any drug with a withdrawal mechanism is addictive, technically. The severity of addiction is highly variable (ranging from mild to severe). I have many patients over the years struggling to get off of their medications. The challenge is very real.
However, this post speaks to the mass over-prescribing that is actually taking place without first exploring causative factors. Pscyh meds may take the “edge” off of the harshness of emotional swings but, unfortunately, they also reduce the solution to the painful challenge of life, namely creativity, meaning, purpose, passion, and sex drive.
Of course, I refer out when psych meds are needed. There are definitely genuine use cases. I would never tell a patient not to take a medication prescribed to them by another doctor.
