My impression is that it’s mostly an American thing; expensive suburbs in most European countries tend to have decent transport (and the lack of it can depress prices). Recently residents of one of the most expensive Dublin suburbs were _extremely_ angry at the possibility that they’d have fewer direct trains into the city due to a network extension.
