If you hate the idea of investing in something that props up wall street and you have a 401k, see if you can self direct and look into thematic investments. There's stuff with religious leanings that will ban abortion and porno and other degenerate things and be age appropriate. There's also "stable value investments" which are exactly what they sound like and have some guarantee against loss but a cap on earnings. Don't forget i-bonds too if you haven't looked into those.
