-If the owner of a network knows that users cannot leave to another instance, they have much incentive to change their ways. Look at the awful stuff Musk is doing, he's been posting obscenities and racist material and taunts his critics for not being able to leave his network.

-It means people with new ideas, new software, new approaches, new governance etc can just start up a server with a readymade audience.

-If one instance goes down, the others don't.
