@axolotl @stairjoke @tb Interesting, all the public information I can find speaks about a non-violent movement. Using sticks and stones to drive out the gang members. Taking up arms from the former police and running regulated community patrol today, with strict gun controls in place for anyone else.

Can you please provide how exactly the ownership of guns led to Cheran becoming a better place? I can't find anything.

The courage of Cheran: organizing against violence
      from @openDemocracy
Mistrust in government systems of rule has led the town of Cherán in Mexico to create its own institutions. The community faces many challenges, not the least of which is the non-violent defence of their people in an area where armed gangs are a constant threat.

A Mexican indigenous town's environmental revolt
When illegal logging turned their green, pine-covered hills into an ecological wasteland, the people of the Mexican indigenous town of Cheran decided to arm themselves with rifles and reclaim their land.
