In fediverse this property can be used to migrate your account from one server to another, even if the server you're migrating from is no longer accessible. The lack of proper migration mechanism is a big problem: instances disappear all the time, and sometimes without notice. Around 20% of my followers are accounts on dead instances.
I agree that key based identity has certain disadvantages, so it's better to keep it optional.
