Agreed, they're actually pretty fun. If I lived in a place where it was practical I would definitely consider building one. There's some impressive builds online of guys using old car alternators for the motor, you can vary the field voltage of the alternator for more speed or more torque.
The cars and stuff can be a pain in the ass to work on and I wouldn't buy one. One that I worked on used the traction pack to run an a/c compressor hooked to a heat exchanger for cooling the coolant for the battery pack itself (which utilized pouch cells).
