Sodium batteries are supposed to hit the market soon, they're cheaper but don't have an energy density much better than lithium

Even if the batteries were standard and universal they'd still be too expensive and not last long enough.
Battery tech has improved massively in the past ~20 years but it's still not where it needs to be to make EVs practical (without massive subsidies).

I was poking around, and if you have a major parts failure lol you can't get them for even popular EVs.
It's sad when cars from the 1950s are more rebuildable than something currently in production.
Also, think Elon is above bricking these things? He'll steal your Plaid or Ludicrous upgrade the instant their tech center is notified that the title/registration changed hands.

lol yea he gets mad when u hack your own upgrades which cost like an extra 3k ... supposedly it will brick your tesla ...

It's a solid and simple concept I'm not against as soon as they make batteries that don't suck, but all these companies are following the EA business model which is off putting to me. I also don't understand why they won't make the batteries modular and universal.

That's a four seat three door car, clearly not what I described.
EVs have their place, but I think they're most suitable as bikes and scooters. Hybrids are still the best option for city cars, much as I hate to admit it. They simplify the drivetrain by a ridiculous amount, have more torque, get better mileage and stress the engine less.
My focus isn't environmentalism, it's cost and space efficiency. I would be interested to hear your argument for that though.
I agree electric cars are ridiculous, you're preaching to the choir.
I also agree about planned obsolescence, my proposals would improve that.

@Eiregoat @KashKustomer @Irishblackpilled >EVs have their place, but I think they're most suitable as bikes and scooters
Agreed, they're actually pretty fun. If I lived in a place where it was practical I would definitely consider building one. There's some impressive builds online of guys using old car alternators for the motor, you can vary the field voltage of the alternator for more speed or more torque.
The cars and stuff can be a pain in the ass to work on and I wouldn't buy one. One that I worked on used the traction pack to run an a/c compressor hooked to a heat exchanger for cooling the coolant for the battery pack itself (which utilized pouch cells).

>hybrid
Dude just stop.
They built a vehicle for you
It's the 1988 CRX HF and it got 45mpg, was simple and easy to maintain, fun to drive, and no lithium or cobalt mining, which is the same issue EVs have.
No one really wants EVs because guess what? You might only drive 6 miles a day. I used to have an hour plus commute each way, and covered a 3000 mile journey to my current abode. Range is desirable.
Smaller gas tank isn't going to do shit and your hybrids are worse for the environment than my 16mpg avg truck from the 90s that still runs fine.
Meanwhile I used to work at a lot where Leafs were being rebatteried and auctioned off. Acres of them. None had more than maybe 110k on the clock. It's wasteful, and as dumb a "solution" as reusable grocery bags.
Modern cars hit the junkyard FAR faster than their forebears did.

I think there are things to improve with the current transportation model, but the war on cars has nothing to do with making life better and everything to do with controlling the movement of people.

Make them simpler?
400+ hp vehicles are common now, 5000lb vehicles handle like smaller cars, efficiency is top notch and this is all while blowing roses out the tailpipe. If you want cutting edge, we have 600-800hp hypercars ready to roll. Modified cars are well into four digits on the street, if you have the money.
Just saying, what further "improvements" will you see?
However, you tell me: who is going to be putting $8000 CVTs in a fucking Altima 3x to reach the lifetime of a Chevy Impala, 265k?
Or whomst is going to drop 12,000 on just the long block for a Chevy LTX V8 in a Silverado. A 350ci Gen I longblock for my truck is like 1600, for reference. Or an LS7 was 17,000 for a CNC ported, titanium rodded, dry sump masterpiece.
Meanwhile Subaru had Practically Zero Emissions Vehicles on the road in like 1996.
Diminishing returns.
It's not efficient or environmentally friendly to make overly complicated cars that won't see 20 years of service. Aka building future junk.

Mostly make them more fit for purpose.
- Range: Most cars are only used for short local trips, school, work, shopping, social event etc, but they're designed more as endurance vehicles for cruising at relatively high speeds. Using a hybrid powerplant, smaller engine and smaller tank would make them a lot more efficient. Electric motors are better at acceleration and deceleration anyhow, they have torque for days.
- Size: Most cars are designed for five passengers *and* cargo but they run mostly empty most of the time. For most people a one or two seater car would make more sense. And even for the family vehicle it should be possible to use modular attachments to expand capacity as needed.
- Complexity/Monopoly: Cars are far more complex than they need to be by design, in order to force consumers to depend on a repair and parts monopoly. Innovation is also curtailed through direct government intervention and indirect intervention such as IP.
Cars can and should be smaller, cheaper, more flexible, more efficient, easier to repair and easier to innovate. Doing this would make most of the problems associated with the transport market go away, including the manufactured ones.
