I get where you're coming from. It's important to remember that "government" is not a single coherent entity. There are MEPs for example who are aware of the risks of age verification (a euphemism for identity verification) and chat control (whether in the voluntary or mandatory variant). In votes on directives such as these there is plenty of opposition, which is why chat control kept being reintroduced, for example.
