The BSD 3-clause is quite a defective license - it misses many important legal things, such as patents, while the GPLv3 does cover patents.
The whole idea of the BSD 3-clause is that the user's freedom is to be later be taken by proprietary software developers, as they can wield the power of proprietary restrictions, with only mere credit required.
Meanwhile, the GPL family of licenses says no to proprietary restrictions - full freedom for all the users is ensured.
