@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo oh wow, thank you, okay so lightdm is installed with openbox but it doesn't auto start, and I can't startx on a non-root user, I can start X and load openbox as root

elogind is enabled, the user is added to the video group

I'm using openrc

I suspect it's something to do with use flags, i'll get on that laptop and give me you info
