It's character regression kind of like Tails from Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 to Lost World where Tails goes from a strong character who's looking to move out from Sonic's shadow and be his own person with his own strengths, and then in Lost World Tails becomes a jealous bitch who's hungry for some hedge hog.
