Uh that's explicitly one of two things that GPL3 was about addressing. They understood it but they were US-based, which is why GPLv1 was US-centric. The important thing for GPLv1 was to free people from proprietary software, and get a Free OS working. By the time of GPLv2 they were on the cusp of success.
They did what no other license in history did for GPLv3 - brought the whole world from every jurisdiction together to make as universal of a license as possible.

Nonsense. GPLv3 protects users every day. The fact that you're saying this on a AGPLv3[1] instance is testament to that fact.
