It's certainly a cultural memetic disease and likely has epigenetic and environmental influence— if they can turn frogs gay from common chemicals, that's a good sign that said chemicals are likely able to make at least a small influence on people. Perhaps the memetic aspects wouldn't catch on so much without all of the environmental poisons.
