Carbon dating is one thing (concentration of c-14 isotope) but that's where the hard science ends. What that MEANS is where narrative or hypothesis come in. Of course King knows how the mainstream scientific hypothesis interprets that, but I think he doesn't agree and is thinking you'll recognize said hypothesis as narrative. If you haven't considered that (why would you— most people don't have a reason to) it's worth thinking on. There are other things besides absolute age, such as cataclysmic activity (e.g. the deluge / floods written about in most cultures).
