It's cool that @Gargron is rejecting funding from VC firms.
But this is all the more reason why Mastodon needs donations.
And not just Mastodon—everyone who's building free and open source Fediverse apps.

@atomicpoet @shelenn There might be some movement on that come new year.
@shelenn @Gargron I also wonder why Mastodon doesn't start a for-profit that's owned by the non-profit. Would give them a more consistent avenue for funding.
@Gargron @shelenn If you ever want to talk to me regarding this, I have some potential ideas on how to make this work for you.
You know I've been banging the drum on getting you funding ?
@oz3mze @shelenn @atomicpoet Mastodon is already a registered non-profit--but in Germany. I don't think there's a reason to move it to the US.
Im curious because my background is in foundation and nonprofit management specifically in grow/scaling startups. When I read the arsTechnica article I was intrigued and was curious if the people/projects behind Fediverse are interested in exploring setting up a community foundation. This removes alot of the redtape involved in funding projects not incorporated in the US as well as eliminates funding restrictions that would likely be where dev direction comes from
Is there a community foundation set up in the US that is fundraising for Fediverse, Mastodon, or any of the other Fediverse projects? There is a lot of opportunity for US corporate, foundation, and donor advised dollars toward projects like these - as well as a lot of wealthy US donors that only make large donations to 501c3s!
