People are making fun of the FB metaverse thing, with good reason. But in all seriousness, I still cannot wrap my head around how shockingly terrible this looks, and how useless it is. $10B!!!! that is so much money!

SuperDicq (superdicq@minidisc.tokyo)'s status on Saturday, 20-Aug-2022 06:59:02 JST SuperDicq @healyn@mastodon.social It all has to be rendered by a Oculus Quest which is basically a low end smartphone hardware-wise. Having used the device it is quite a terrible experience compared to using a headset with a desktop computer.

You can run VRchat on a Quest 2Yeah if you're content with not being able to join half of the worlds and see half of the avatars because they are too graphically intense for the quest's hardware. -

I don't know what your experience was, but the XR2 can be quite impressive. Hell, take a look at Red Matter 2 gameplay. -

SuperDicq (superdicq@minidisc.tokyo)'s status on Saturday, 20-Aug-2022 08:20:30 JST SuperDicq @healyn@mastodon.social Probably, but I think Facebook's biggest concern right now is making it cheaper. They want to suck people into their ecosystem before other companies start making better headsets.

People aren't complaining about RM2 running at 72fps because I have to admit it is impressive for the hardware to pull it off. It's still not good compared to real headset tho. -

72 fps. No one has reported problems with RM2 on the Q2 so it doesn't seem to be a massive issue.
But you know, whatever dude, I'm not going to argue with some pancaker about VR. -

\\ (slash@cdrom.tokyo)'s status on Saturday, 20-Aug-2022 08:44:03 JST \\ @SuperDicq @shebang @healyn I mean even if that’s the case, I grew up playing doom in the single digit framerates on a terrible desktop so I’m pretty forgiving on that stuff, provided the actual input response feels natural enough. That said I’m going nowhere near anything Meta/FB makes for totally different reasons and probably sitting VR out entirely until there’s something that plays nice with linux and maybe even OpenXR/xrdesktop are further along.

I think hardware wise the Quest 2 is a decent headset if you use it for PCVR. I think using it as a standalone is where it is very underpowered.
Personally I would prefer having an Index over a Quest 2. Mostly because of less botnet software and higher FOV. Wireless is not an advantage to me, that only increases the chance of lag and disconnects. I'm against wireless devices of any sort mostly.
Doesn't a base station system potentially allow for much better tracking? I agree the base stations are too expensive tho. -

Shebang! :blobpeektrans: (shebang@freespeech.group)'s status on Saturday, 20-Aug-2022 08:52:23 JST Shebang! :blobpeektrans: @SuperDicq @slash @healyn No, you are wrong on all the technical subjects. In fact, the Quest 2 isn't even "low end". It's inexpensive, but its not low end.
Compared to say, and Index, it has higher resolution screens, is lighter, is vastly more ruggedly built, offers wireless PCVR, and has a simple setup that doesn't require expensive base stations to use. It can do up to 120hz.
Essentially, it's obvious to anyone who knows anything about VR hardware that you know literally nothing about it. -

As it stands currently I think if I would get a headset for personal I mostly use it to play racing simulators with a wheel and never use the controllers.

\\ (slash@cdrom.tokyo)'s status on Saturday, 20-Aug-2022 08:56:46 JST \\ @SuperDicq @shebang @healyn I think if we could untangle controllers from their HMDs in terms of driver support and interchangeability there’d actually be a real opportunity for open hardware to pry its way into VR, and that has me really excited. It’s probably one of the only things about VR that I’m looking forward to.
