@xianc78 I will set up an XMPP server over the weekend, don't worry.
The reason why I only did IRC for now is due to a lack of time.
Setting that one up took quite a bit of time already, since it's my first time setting one up on the darknet.

@ryo Sad to see you go, but I perfectly understand. I will try to get I2P to work with an IRC client. I wished you went with XMPP instead though (messages are temporarily archived and visible without typing some command).

@xianc78 @opal I have yet to look into that, but so far what turns me off from that is that it's written in Python.
I just don't want to waste time fixing it all the time.

@ryo @opal It's just a text file and there are many different clients.

      I update my feed using
      echo -e "`date -Im`\tInsert text here" >> twtxt.txt!

Though I only have two posts on my feed so far.

MariaDB is less strict (it doesn't care if the value is an int or varchar for example), has less features (for example, you need to store booleans as integers, because MySQL doesn't have booleans), and is a little bit slower, but it's much easier to setup and maintain, SQL is more straightforward, doesn't come with weird bullshit (and if it does, it doesn't force you into using it), and at least from my experience it runs perfectly fine for many years.

For Postgres, simply invert all of the above.

Also, the main mascot for MySQL is a dolphin, Postgres is an elephant, and MariaDB is a seal.

@SuperDicq @wrongthink @ryo My only big experience when it comes to databases is Postgres, and that's because I've needed it for the parappa.party Matrix. Overall I'd say Postgres is fine, but I'm up for trying out MySQL/Maria once I get the opportunity to.
What would you say are the big differences between MySQL/MariaDB and Postgres?

@wrongthink @ryo Nope, Pleroma/Akkoma has a hard dependency on Postgresql.

I’m personally more of a MySQL/MariaDB/Percona fan as well and would use that if it was possible.

@ryo I was going to dive into fediverse hosting but after reading up on the pleroma/akkoma split and then your insights on DBs, I think I’ll hold off for a bit. It looks like there’s no way I can substitute mariaDB into place during installation.

@parappanon @ryo @wrongthink From my experience MySQL/MariaDB is a lot smarter when it comes to caching and optimalization. From my experience with Postgresql it always needs constant maintenance like vacuum jobs and tweaking settings to keep it running, MySQL/MariaDB does a lot of these things automatically.

@wrongthink @ryo I wonder how hard it would be to write an ActivityPub implementation from scratch. The official documentation for ActivityPub looks pretty confusing to me.

You could just wait until Wormhole is finished. But I don't know what @neko is using for database.
