Today is Pearl Harbor Day in the U.S., a “day that will live in infamy” for the unprovoked attack by the Empire of Japan upon U.S. forces stationed in Hawaii. But it also marked a dark turning point for Japanese Americans, who overnight became the “enemy.” (1/4)
At age 4, I was classified as 4c, enemy alien, even though I was born in the U.S. Within a few months, the internment of our community was ordered by FDR with broad support from the American people, who turned their backs upon us. We lost our homes, our businesses and our freedoms. (2/4)
It has been my lifelong mission to tell the story of the Japanese American internment so that we remember and do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Now, I am bringing that story to the UK from Jan-Apr in a show called “Allegiance” based on my own experiences. (3/4)
@georgetakei Thank you for sharing. I was given a very "white washed"/glossed over version of what happened in school. Its sad when you learn how it actually impacted people.
@georgetakei I cannot afford London… Will happily share. I’m wishing you all the best for the show and for 2023. When you’re a must-see sell out they’ll have to be a tour. You need to start in Newcastle.
@georgetakei My Japanese roommate rtold me of her parent’s stories of Japanese “Internment” camps. This horrid piece of our history is not taught in schools, or at least not when I was young, Yes, I see the differences in the color of our skin and the shape of our eyes, but that makes me all the more excited to find out what path my family has walked, and where it has led them, that makes them different from me, yet so very much part of me. Go back far enough and differences disappear.
@georgetakei Terribly sorry for the pain and suffering your family and friends endured. I cannot possibly know what you all went through. I am thankful for you being able to share your story. I was stationed on Okinawa, Japan and felt fortunate to be there 30 mos. I immersed myself into the local area as best I could. I dated a couple of Okinawan ladies. I attended a wedding; a concert; movies. I was not in mainland Japan. Be well.
@georgetakei I am heartbroken for what you and other Japanese Americans unjustly received. I am impressed by your ability to not display bitterness. You are a true role model for not letting adversity run one's life.
@georgetakei It was not ‘unprovoked’. The US had blockaded Japan’s oil supplies, without which it would have been unable to feed or defend the country. Check your history.
@georgetakei I still can’t believe Americans were classed as the enemy simply using guilt by vague association. So sad and a very embarrassing thing to look at in the here and now for the USA. In the same way that you can’t view any Russians that live elsewhere in the world for their crazy leaders actions. Much love to you and thinking of all those who have suffered under this judgment.
