A month after the Great Muskification, most (but not all) of the communities I'm part of seem to have moved here, and the quality of discussion seems better in just about every way.

Still not a great source for breaking news, emergency announcements, etc.

I wonder how long it would take for news of a Bay Area earthquake to reach me here vs Twitter.

@mattblaze My guess is that people who are interested in that kind of functionality for mastodon might begin to crystallize around some hashtags to enable it, for example, #/Breaking or #/Earthquake

That seems better than putting tweets from accounts people don’t follow into their timelines. The fact that never happens is one of the big draws here for me.

@mattblaze I should’ve spoken more precisely: to me an algorithm or joint administrative consensus putting posts it thinks I should be interested in into my timeline is very different from people I have chosen to follow sharing things that matter to them.

@whetstone Boosting puts posts from people you don't follow in your timeline. That exists here.

The difference is that there is much less discussion here of breaking news, and much less boosting of it, at least among those I follow.

@mattblaze Yes, people are still getting used to how things work here and it’s not as useful for hyper-rapid information dissemination. Following hashtags is my theory for how people who want that can make it happen here most easily, since it leverages the existing system rather than requiring a major conceptual shift.

@whetstone I have (had) a strictly chronological timeline on Twitter. But it includes (or included) lots of breaking news, because people RT'd and discussed it there. But not so much here.

@mattblaze I just realized I should have replied to one of @botolo86 ’s replies rather than to your main post, since you were just observing the phenomenon and not making suggestions for changes.

@mat @mattblaze Pretty sure that’s what Matt meant. I’m not sure where you could even start a chronological timeline.

@mattblaze @whetstone Wait, I'm now genuinely confused. Twitter does not offer a chronological timeline does it? I thought your choices were only a reverse chronological timeline or "the algorithm"? (I'm responding to this after 7 hours because I do have a chronological timeline.)

@mat i’ve never seen a chronological timeline offered, either here or on twitter.

@mattblaze @whetstone Right, OK. Then in that case a) I recommend that everyone switch to an actual chronological timeline, it is SO MUCH BETTER, and b) could people write "reverse chronological" when that's what they mean? I really feel like people only started to drop the "reverse" just recently, and I'm starting to feel gaslighted...

@mat That’s probably why people feel comfortable dropping the “reverse” for brevity, if you have to go through all that to force a true chronological feed. The primary thing they’re distinguishing is whether posts are ordered by posting time or by algo.

@whetstone I mean, that's the point right? These services are deliberately trying to maximise "engagement" by turning you into junkies. Once you break out of the commercial services, you can make it behave how you want. I use Friendica, and I wrote the mailstream plugin to send my feed via email. Most email clients allow you to order messages in a whole variety of different orders, which is one reason I wrote mailstream.
