   #japodon Renho, a well-known opposition politician in #Japan opened an account in Mastodon. My Japanese Mastodon account TL was filled with chatter about its implications for the instance admin. Renho is a woman whose father is Taiwanese. She has the double whammy of being female and not “purely Japanese” and has long been the target of conservative trolls. Some instance admins worry that they will have to monitor trolls, and others worry about potential legal consequences for themselves.

     According to the Washington Post, quite a few US democratic legislators opened accounts in Mastodon but I haven’t really seen the kind of reaction I’ve seen in Japanese-language Mastodon when a prominent progressive female politician opened an account in Mastodon. The issue in Japan is: will conservative trolls torment her in Mastodon just like in Twitter, and what would be the responsibility of the instance admin. What would happen, if AOC opened an account in Mastodon?

     In Japan, some instance admins are saying that politicians should have their own instance run by the government or their party. The Japanese government generously subsidizes political parties according to the number of parliamentary seats they have, so established parties certainly should be able to have their own Mastodon instances.
