@fluepke @f4grx @freecad Imagine anyone not being a computer person but wanting a good, free CAD software.
"Go fork it and keep it slop free" is like telling people who don't want a subscription for heating in their car to build their own car if they're not happy with the existing options.
@f4grx @freecad who forces you into using FreeCAD?
If you prefer hand-written code, go fork FreeCAD. Why would anyone owe you this effort?
@freecad I am VERY SAD to see claude commits in your repo, and that you dont have a restrictive anti-ai policy.
We are now forced to eat your slop and there is no free alternative.
I feel betrayed. It's not better than user capture by proprietary software tools.
this is very very disappointing and stressful. I cannot recommend freecad to anyone.
@fluepke @gigabecquerel @f4grx @freecad They don't owe work. They do owe non-betrayal of an expectation they established. If they no longer want to maintain it as free software but instead want to make a slop thing, they should leave the project in the state it's in and call their new slop thing something different.
@gigabecquerel @f4grx @freecad
I am not here to argue if AI is good or bad. Slop free software is a valid request. My question is: Why would the maintainers of a free software owe us the hard work of hand writing code?
Regarding cars: I don’t like the existing options and therefore don’t own one.
Regarding subscriptions: Adobe is subscription, I dislike Gimp and Inkscape, so I paid for Affinity, which I think is genuinely good.
@hlukasz @wronglang @fluepke @f4grx @freecad This is not about "enforcing developers use or not use a tool".
It's about an expectation that a thing that was produced and promoted as free software and as something that users can trust remains free software and remains something they can trust.
Replacing its parts with lossily-plagiarized slop makes it non-free and untrustworthy.
This is not about the "tools" it's about the provenance of the ingredients. The people who want to say it's about "tools" (this probably includes you) have an agenda, and are the tools.
@wronglang @fluepke @f4grx @freecad I don't quite understand why users should enforce developers to use or not use a tool. In projects like this, developers spend their time, without getting any payment, to deliver a nice software that anybody can use. What they get in return? Complains from users that they use a tool that somebody does not like... That's disgusting in my opinion.
@fluepke @f4grx @freecad you may not have noticed but, like most large projects, FreeCAD is a community. There is labor exchanged between developers and users of the software. That clearly means both users and developers have a claim to argue for how the software should be developed.
Opening the doors to LLM code brings an environmentally destructive technology that damages maintainability and erodes onboarding of new contributors into the community. Some people don't like that.
