The few times I went to do anything intensely outdoorsy in California, I didn’t really enjoy the communal food choices of my fellow hikers (sorry but I don’t like trail mix or oats or bland food, even when hiking)

After being in Nepal for a couple of days and hearing western trekkers complain about eating only rice and lentils for days

Maybe I should do outdoorsy things here!

@va2lam I think I’ll try oats and bring a savory dashi powder to make a porridge. That
      would work

@skinnylatte sometimes we have ramen for breakfast when hiking. Oats is kind of poor. Don't really know what is the ideal breakfast though.

Also slightly more interesting than trail mix: "Original outback mix": https://www.newworld.co.nz/shop/product/5252062_ea_000nw

After those experiences I formed a group chat with folks I know who like outdoorsy things in California.. and who like similar food as me. We plan to do things together and take turns prepping food.

However the group has also evolved into an ‘eating for fun’ group and we regularly do things like ‘let’s go to six taco trucks in Oakland at the same time!’

@dyckron yeah I don’t like any sweet breakfasts so oats have gotta be savory for me, but this opinion is not shared by others except those of a similar cultural background..

@skinnylatte brown rice, black beans & green lentils are my staples... I'd eat more granola and such but it's all shockingly high in sugar. And oats can always be perked up with a generous helping of cinnamon, imho

@ellestad @va2lam I’ve been in large group camps where one or two people are in charge of the cooking and they don’t.. share my breakfast needs

I’ll start bringing my own stuff but also sometimes it’s weird not to do what the group is doing

@skinnylatte I mean, oat porridge is just porridge, you can put any garnish on you want! Pork floss, fermented tofu, pickles... Why not? @va2lam

      Dehydrated tofu

@skinnylatte fair enough! I'd think you could prepare it with broth and savoury spices, dietary yeast, etc, for a nice brekkie. Maybe I'll try that! Oats is a great performance enhancer and the only plant source of avenathramides, powerful anti oxidants

@skinnylatte I've always really liked meal planning for backpacking trips. Figuring out what can actually be accomplished on the trail with a small amount of space is a whole thing. Mealtime should be fun anyway. There's no reason to just eat bland staple food.
