Your child has been through enough. She can be a wolf if she wants to.

      It'll be fine.

Maybe it will be better than fine. Maybe it's something that helps her love herself & feel secure. She was always going to have to find her own sense of belonging in the world.

I guess this is the degeneracy that the left wants: people wearing wolf masks & cute little tails because it makes them feel at home with themselves. Oh the horror! How can society possibly survive this?

But to him it's an "ideology" that she's been captured by, & I don't quite get that. I mean, I do, because I know about his right-wing influences, but...

Is the "ideology" that you can exist however you want to as long as you aren't harming anyone? In principle, he of all people ought to agree with that.

I haven't talked to my niece, so I don't know her feelings except through his lens, but I'm going to encourage him to stop seeing "ideology" & see his daughter & her feelings & experiences.

Either this is just a phase of her adolescence that she will look back on later as the time when she felt most comfortable as a fox OR this will continue to hold meaning as an enduring identity.

Both of these seem plausible. It's really common for autistic children to feel like they are aliens or fairies or robots because they feel fundamentally different.

Either way what's the harm other than "some people will reject you for being different" (something she ALREADY experiences)?

My brother lives in a fucking van & has a kind of "wild man" look going. I don't think he should be worried about her perceived weirdness.

The bit that gets to me is that he wants to be allowed to live & exist in the world however he wants, so why not show her the same courtesy? What are the fucking rules she needs to follow?

I guess she wants to wear a tail & a mask when she goes out some places. I can't see the harm he sees in it.

A lot of people will perceive her as "weird," but she IS weird. She is not like most other people. People see that.

Some people are actually drawn to her weirdness because she is so charming, & clever. Those people are unlikely to be thrown.

It's not shocking that she's a therian when I have always looked at her & thought "if you told me that child was fey, I would believe you".

So apparently my niece has told my brother she's a therian (the identity of an animal), & he thinks she's been indoctrinated by an "ideology".

I guess I should ask him what the ideology is, but I'm not sure I want to know.

I don't think it's surprising that my neurodivergent niece whose life experience is extremely different from her friends would feel somewhat alien to other people & want to express that, which is what I told him.
