    If there is going to be fascism everywhere I prefer to deal with it in English, and preferably somewhere with a lot of immigrant food in spite of the fascism (vs places that don’t have much good immigrant food even without the fascism!

    I would also prefer to be warm

    Mainly I just don’t want to be cold, eat bad food, and have to deal with fascism. Or have to learn a new language I don’t like. The first two would make me give up on life much more easily.

    I could also just try to go back home and wait it out and deal with another kind of authoritarianism. But at least I won’t be cold or sad about food.

      @edgeofeurope right, and that will be my cue to also go. If I get stuck, I will try to go somewhere with those things because it would point to relative safety.

      I genuinely believe that America is much too large to have exactly the same thing, but there will be other forms of horrors that aren’t just about things like this.

      @skinnylatte So how many proper Jewish restaurants do you think existed in Berlin in... let's say 1938? The immigrant food is first to go as they will simply start to take assets, and any rights to own businesses, from whoever they deem unworthy to be in their country.

      There is precedent for this. My grandparents, during the war, spoke of how it was the little nice meals they could scrape together from rations and backyard gardening (you can still grow things in the tropics) that helped them survive several years of Japanese murder and brutality.

      @skinnylatte I hear you.

      For me, going home would add being cold at a level I don't currently want to contemplate, in the context of these calculations.

      I'm always happy to learn a new language, but I think going forward, I would like to live in regions with languages I already speak, or languages in the same language families I already know, or recognized as "easy to learn". Because I love language but the world is hard and I am tired.

      My god, I hope we all live & stay safe.

      @skinnylatte my list is half same and half opposite. If Norway had ok-ish transgender healthcare, I’d love to move to Svalbard. Nice long winters, I could source there also enough Thai recipes, shop in Thai supermarket.

      Did I mention that it’s cold and there’s no sun for like two months?

      (I probably should investigate my family tree around 30 years’ war to figure out who brought those north Swedish genes to Central Europe.)
