    RE: https://mastodon.social/@DrorBedrack/117184752378937432

I am deeply suspicious of these testimonials. I know a lot of blind people, and when I hear from someone I know I will say something. The only thing I have heard thus far was that it's a pain to configure them as vision aids, they aren't designed with this purpose in mind.

Do you remember when people were making this case that "AI helps disabled people ... somehow ..." and that made some people back off because, well that sounds amazing right?

IDK. I think these things can be very cynical.

I'm pretty sure @WeirdWriter@caneandable.social has plenty of words on the matter

here are some apropos posts I've read and enjoyed immensely

      https://sightlessscribbles.com/posts/disability-dongle/

https://sightlessscribbles.com/posts/the-colonization-of-confidence/ is only vaguely related, but it was where I came across this great writer, and still my favorite piece. heck, it can be related in that people with disabilities may end up being induced to lose confidence on their own skills to navigate the world and become dependent on these not-quite accessibility aids. but that might be twisting his words too much.

I've certainly considered it. but I struggle for time every single day, and that would be too much of a temptation. so I'd start mostly ignoring it in self defense, and then I'd be back where I started. so I go for occasional manual visits to see what catches my attention. it's not ideal, but it's what more-or-less works under persistent information overload 😞
