Canadians have done 22 billion in Damage to the US economy this year alone by pretending it simply doesn’t exist. The 2025 boycott of American goods never ended. It’s been a year and a half, and the shelves still have the little flags on the Canadian products. We are not a political coalition anymore. We’re a country, and countries with our history don’t negotiate the terms of their own disappearance.

In the First World War, the Germans learned to dread one thing on the Western Front: finding out that the Canadian Corps was moving into the line opposite them. Lloyd George wrote after the war that the Canadians were marked out as the storm troops of the British Empire, and that when the Germans spotted the Canadians arriving, they braced for the worst. During the last hundred days of that war, four Canadian divisions engaged and beat something like a quarter of the entire German army on the Western Front.
Here’s the part the postcards leave out… Canadians in the Great War frequently killed Germans who were trying to surrender… Not once. Not one bad unit. Cook found it ran through almost every battalion in the Corps, from privates to generals.”

Instead, by August, the commander of the First Canadian Army, General Crerar, had to issue a formal order telling his men to stop taking revenge on German prisoners. You don’t write that order for troops who need encouragement… there’s no doubt that we did this, and they did. The difference was that the SS did it cold, hours after the battle, with a pistol. Canadians did it hot, in the fight, and then kept coming. The Hitlerjugend was the most fanatical formation Hitler had in the West, and the Canadians ground it into the mud between Caen and Falaise anyway.
That’s who Trump just decided to tariff. A country that answered the worst Hitler could send with a division that had to be ordered to show mercy, and then liberated Holland on the way home, feeding starving Dutch kids out of their own rations. The Dutch still send us tulips every spring. Both things are true. Both things are us.”

We buried 45,000 of our own in that war from a country of 11 million and never asked for the credit, which is why the credit tends to get forgotten.“

“On Friday night the trade talks collapsed. On Saturday morning, the 50 percent tariffs kicked in on about 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods, everything from beer and cheese to hockey sticks, under Section 338 of a 1930 tariff law nobody had touched since 1949. Trump went on Truth Social and posted that Canada wants the benefits of being a state without being one. Mark Carney stood up in Ottawa, got asked why it sounded like he was going to war, and said, “Because we were attacked.” Dollar-for-dollar retaliation starts September 8. Steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, electronics.

That number is going one direction.

That’s roughly 117,000 dollars for every American, double what it was ten years ago, and interest is now the fastest-growing thing the federal government pays for. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the emergency oil stockpile that’s supposed to keep the lights on when the world goes sideways, sat at 293 million barrels on August 14, the lowest it has been since 1982, after Trump drained 172 million barrels trying to hold down gas prices once Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in February. Refineries are running at 97 percent to keep up. And the single largest supplier of crude oil to the United States, by a mile, is the country he just tariffed. Carney said it himself on Saturday: Canada fuels American growth, and he doesn’t think they want us to stop sending it.”
