“I keep hearing Americans describe Canadians as nice. We are. We’re the nicest people you’ll ever meet right up until the second you put your hands on us, and then something switches over that took the German General Staff two wars to properly understand. We’re a 40-million-person battalion in Bermuda shorts. We shovel your driveway at -4°F wearing a T-shirt; we say sorry when you step on our foot; and we went to war in September 1939, two years and three months before Pearl Harbour made it convenient for Washington to show up. We were at Dieppe when nobody else would go. We were farthest inland on D-Day. We pushed through the Scheldt in water up to our chests so Antwerp could open and Patton could get gas. We buried 45,000 of our own in that war from a country of 11 million and never asked for the credit, which is why the credit tends to get forgotten.“
