Trump will never send troops north. Not because he’s decent, but because the American military is the one institution in that country that would refuse him, publicly, and he knows it. The Joint Chiefs would rather resign en masse than… occupy Buffalo’s hockey rivals. And the second armour crossed at Detroit, the United States would come apart. Not Canada…. An invasion would be the fastest route to a second American civil war that any president has ever found, and the man knows a losing hand when the whole table can see it.

So the war stays economic, and that’s where the history actually bites, because economic war rewards exactly two things: who can absorb pain longer, and who has what the other guy can’t live without.”
