  I tried to do the same, with the same results. I even tried to play the "I Can Fix Her" game with a couple of BPD girlfriends, and lost big.
  
  The only way that people like that can heal or whatever, is that they have to stop projecting and begin to realize that they themselves are screwed up, and they have to intensely desire to change and take the necessary steps required to do so. I've seen a couple of people do exactly that, but they are far from the norm. Most don't even get close.

  I try to keep that in mind. My father grew up in a small town in Kansas wherein everyone knew everybody else's business, and his father was the town drunk. Couldn't have been easy for him.
  
  However, if a family member insists on not changing and simply doubling down on their bullshit, the only thing you can do is to wash your hands of them and move on.

  I had her cremated, then my aunt when she popped, and dumped them both in a mountain creek along with all my aunt's cats that had died and she had cremated. One big dump of ashes.

  I didn't have time to make a Viking ship and send them off the way I wanted, but yeah. That's also when I burned every single photograph I had and had gotten from them as well. I was making a clean break from the past, but of course you can't dis-remember things. At least I broke the cycle.

  It sucks that you can't pick and choose your family members, so when they're pathological types, they sort of haunt your entire life even after they pass. You sent them off right though.
  
  My father was a textbook case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and my sister took after him. Felt like I was assigned two demons of torment at birth. I cut them off years ago.

  I've already told about my mom the Borderline Personality self-medicating with booze, but my aunt was the classic feminist cat lady who, when she died, had 22 cats, boxes of stuff reaching the ceiling, and was miserable every day of her life.
  
  I'm surprised I made it this far, but I'm too stubborn to roll over. But I see them now as victims, because grandma was severely fucked up. Shit rolls downhill.
