   huh, I was so into focused about the total eclipse in Spain in Aug 2027 (which will be almost total in most of Portugal) that I completely missed the fact that there's another in Aug 2026, namely tomorrow. if one my girls hadn't written me today about it I might not even have noticed.

   it's hard to get much information but from what I gather 2026 will actually be a much deeper eclipse in here than 2027 (as opposed to Spain, where 2027 will be the big event). but also because it's so late in the evening for an August (starts at 19-ish, peaks ~20:12 in my area) the sun will be very low and hard to see unless you go to a high place with an unobstructed view. not that i can see it without eclipse glasses of course, but it would be nice to find a place with tree leaf shadows or something indrect like that

     a curious thing about being a historical linguist is that many native speakers *and* philologists/classicists are sceptical, wary, or downright hostile over the idea that the classics were pronounced in a different way than the modern language. so you meet for example Greek folk or Greek theatre specialists who get all but hostile if you point out that χ was an aspirate plosive not a fricative at the time of Euripides etc., or English speakers who get nervous when you pronounce Old English with normal pre-shift vowels etc. that happens in Japanology also, no matter how strong is the evidence for previous stages of the language (e.g. with Jesuit transcriptions of syllable-final consonants in nanban-era Sino-Japanese), or when the old sounds are still alive in peripheral dialects (e.g. Tōhoku preserving prenasalisation of voiced plosives), or the simple fact that phonetics change palpably even in a single lifetime and listening to records from 100y+ ago is enough to extrapolate how much sound systems must change in 500 or 2000 years.

     I had forgotten by now the Old Japanese transcriptions so I looked it up for reference for this toot and it's weird how nostalgic and emotional one can feel about a table of orthographies for transcription of eight-century Chinese characters adapted for representation of a stage of Japanese phonetics that nobody but some weird nerds still care about. yo-no-naka pa natukasiki-mono to ara-mu :owocry:

     in any case that gives me a small rehersal to test drive my project of playing the flute bawdily to attract Ama-Terasu-Opo-Mi-Kamï back from behind the cave rock in tribute to Ama-no-Uzumê-no-Mikoto. I am not ready and I have not practised but the Sun waits for no woman
