I don't typically have Asian pear, but got some in our oddBunch box recently. On the plus side, its shelf life seems quite long, and it has a nice crunch, but its pretty much flavourless.

So we've enjoyed it as a texture mostly – eg on oatmeal porridge, in regular or fruit salad.

Do you buy Asian pear often? Is it always flavourless, or is it just what we get here?

@colinburgess @ottaross the best Asian pears have a mild fragrance, goes well with summer salads, with balsamic vinegar, but they do tend to taste flavorless abroad

@ottaross the first time I had an Asian pear was when I was in Hong Kong as a teenager. They were so fragrent and delicious, and I could not stop eating them! A couple of years later I could finally buy Asian pears in my small town, but they had absolutely no flavour compared to what I had in Hong Kong. Every Asian pear I've had in Canada has just been a let down, so I stopped buying them.

Sometimes it's completely unsatisfying when you know how much better something can be than what is in front of you

@justinto aha - good to know. Makes sense.

I've heard there are a bunch of fruits in South America that have a very short shelf life, and for which transport is pretty much impossible. It makes me want to do a fruit tasting tour down there.

@ottaross That's me! When I travel to South and Central America my goal is to basically eat fruits and veggies ( & other weirder foods that sound awful on paper) I can't even try here. I'm not very serious about it, but I look up what doesn't ship, when it's in season, where it grows for when I'll be in the area. I have changed time of year of trips to better align with harvests. I make a checklist of what I want to try and just hit the markets ask everyone.

Not everything great, but everything is simply so unique it's hard to pass up. Flavours are only understood by experiencing them, so I put in the effort to make it happen
