   Clement of Alex., along with being one of the first (assumed) orthodox writers to espouse the trad view of the Sadducean Question, was a key bridge between the apostles and the insanity we see fester up in the first millennium. It was only 100 years between the Stromata and collective churches damning true faith perhaps the first time in history.

Better still, if they could have spent an hour in modern society to see the alternatives between a loving husband and wife who “have sex too frequently” verses the various gender goblins and hedonism that we have today.

     @SuperSnekFriend I will take a stab at defending the spirit of what I believe they’re saying. In the greek traditions which respect the *nous* as the soul (some variant of this, with different traditions viewing it as higher than the soul, synonymous to the soul, or more of a spiritual eye or connection to God [note, I dont read Greek and college was long ago]), the idea of asceticism is about subordinating the body and mind to the soul. Self-control and restraint of one’s desires are therefor analogous to any exercise one might do to strengthen the body. We don’t hear that much condemnation against gluttony, likely because being fat is historically a luxury while sex for a married couple is “free”. I could expound on all of this, but I’m less interested in defending the position than contextualizing it as a message from someone likely trained in or by students of Greek schooling and delivering a sermon directed at the things he sees in front of him.
     
     Personally I do not like abstaining from sex for fasts. I have bigger sins and things which interfere with my ability to focus on God than marital passions with my wife. Modernity is pretty awful for spiritual life all around, and intimacy is an escape from the many distractions and wicked things of the world.

     @BowsacNoodle @SuperSnekFriend From my understanding, Nous is often translated into English as "Mind" or "Understanding" (this is how the word is used in the New Testament, apparently). Gnosticism and Neoplatonism, which often strongly overlap, have very weird views on the Nous, that would influence the Church in extremely negative ways.

     1st - 2nd Century Church Fathers don’t affirm contemporary attitudes toward sex between married couples

     clearly fell under the sway of Gnostic weirdos and must therefore be wrong, clear up until Martin Luther set the record straight when Christianity starts to agree more with contemporary attitudes about sex

     See, arguments like this are super suspicious, to me. Were I so inclined, I’d be looking for explanations that didn’t do violence to the integrity of the Early Church in an obvious attempt at rebuilding the Faith to affirm my own preferences.

     For some reason I don’t personally share those same attitudes as Saints like Clement, as regards marital sex. It just really hasn’t come up irl, only in online debates with dudes trying to find a bone to pick with the Traditional Communions. I just don’t don’t think anyone has such stringent expectations in today’s world.

     @KingOfWhiteAmerica @branman65 @SuperSnekFriend There are ideals regarding fasting and there is practice. Abstinence includes food and any activities and practices which may interfere with spiritual growth (including marital intimacy if both spouses agree to abstain). In ye olde days, the expectation for adult men was to fast all day until evening liturgy, then only eat after the Eucharist had been their first meal (Wednesday evening meant 48 hours until another meal). Whether that was an ideal or practice is beyond me, but I know people seriously struggle to do that today. Maybe expectations have changed from society; the average person isn’t a peasant farmer who could spend a lot of the Great Fast away from people and less active.
