@ai6yr I always thought Airstreams were cool since I saw them on TV for quarantining the Apollo astronauts on the aircraft carrier after they splashed down. Space-aged!
@mattblaze@ai6yr is that "we don't want astronauts bring back a space virus" still current policy? Seems we are in love with all kinds of viruses, germs and parasites... JFK Jr. would be so excited if we added a space virus to that mix.
@carstenfranke @mattblaze@federate.social @ai6yr It is not current. When no one had been to the Moon before, they had no idea whether any kind of pathogens might exist. Fair enough to take the precaution. After Apollo 11, 12 & 14 they learned it wasn't necessary. Onward and continuing today, astronauts still quarantine before launch to wait out the time a contagion would take to make them sick, before it can interfere with their space mission. But there's no quarantine after re-entry. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-missions/why-were-apollo-11-astronauts-put-in-quarantine
