     It’s civilised. It allows small businesses to exist. It means that families are less likely to spend precious leisure time walking around shopping malls, buying crap and stuffing their faces with junk food.

     I think the biggest factor might be that European cities and towns are less car-centric. People are more likely to walk to local shops, buying fresh food every few days, instead of filling their car with processed, frozen crap. Life is slower, nicer and more real. Older cities and towns are more pedestrian friendly.

     Australia isn’t as bad as the US in this way. Our culture isn’t quite as capitalistic, individualistic etc. But our sprawling cities & suburbs are certainly too car-centric.

     @Susan60 One other thing that I appreciate is that things aren't open 24 hours.

     If it's 11pm and you're out of milk, you literally *can't* leave the house to get more. There's no place to buy it. Same for hardware stores and everything else.

     This sucks when I'm out of smokes, but 1) it forces me to plan ahead for those things and 2) it *allows* me to take a fucking break once in awhile.

     @Susan60 It does not bother me in the slightest.

     Having spent the last 3 decades killing myself for the tiniest profit, it's refreshing to be someplace where people don't have to do that.

     It took us a while to adjust when we first went to Europe. It’s not that good service isn’t valued. It’s about having self respect as well as respect for others. Bending over backwards to get a sale isn’t about respect.

     Nobody here cares if they lose your money. Five minutes to lunch? Come back in two hours. Or don't. They don't care.
